All gotras.
Why this matters in India
- About 3.5 to 4% of people in India carry beta thalassemia, and up to 17% in some communities.
- An estimated 10,000 to 12,000 babies are born with severe hemoglobin disorders in India every year.
- Different gotras don't mean unrelated: a gotra only follows the father's line, so cousins through your mother usually have a different gotra.

Questions from Indian couples.
How much does the couple check cost in India?
Prices are in ₹ and depend on the check and your city. Book online and we confirm the exact price, lab and timing before you pay anything.
Do we need a DNA kit?
Not for the carrier check: it's a blood test at a lab, no kit needed. For the relatedness check you each need a raw DNA file from a consumer test such as MyHeritage, AncestryDNA or 23andMe. Many of these kits are hard to buy in India, so it's most useful if you've already tested, for example while living abroad.
Is a thalassemia test the same as kundli matching?
No. Kundli matching compares birth charts. A thalassemia test checks your blood for a real inherited condition. If both partners carry it, each pregnancy has a 1 in 4 chance of thalassemia major. Many families now do both.
Can you marry your cousin in India?
Under the Hindu Marriage Act, first cousins are within the prohibited degrees unless an established custom allows it. Muslim personal law permits first-cousin marriage. The Special Marriage Act prohibits it unless a government-recognised custom applies.
Is same-gotra marriage legal?
Yes. The Hindu Marriage Act does not mention gotra. Same-gotra marriage is legal as long as the couple are not sapindas or within the prohibited degrees.
